Turkey welcomes UN report

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu hailed a UN probe that said Israel broke the law when its troops stormed a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The report by the UN Human Rights Council "is extremely unbiased and based on sound evidence. We appreciate it," Davutoglu was quoted by Anatolia as telling reporters in New York on the sidelines of the UN general assembly.
"It meets our expectations. I hope the Israeli side will...from now on act within international law," he added.
The report, released Wednesday, said there was "clear evidence to support prosecutions" of crimes including "willful killing; torture or inhuman treatment" against Israel over the May 31 raid that left nine Turkish activists dead.
The commission threw out Israel's argument that activists on the aid ship were violent thereby justifying the decision to open fire, adding that some had been the victim of actions "consistent with ... summary execution."
Israel rejected the report as "biased" and "one-sided."
The raid delivered a heavy blow to the already fragile ties between Turkey and the Jewish state, prompting Ankara to withdrew its ambassador and cancel joint war games.
Turkey says Israel must apologise over the raid, pay compensation for the victims and lift the blockade of Gaza for the recovery of bilateral ties.
"Our aim is not to cause any political crisis, but to make sure that everyone respects international law and that no country sees itself above the law," Davutoglu said.
"We will never allow that in the eastern Mediterranean."
