President Barack Obama spoke by phone with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and the White House said they expressed deep concern about the violence in Syria.
"The leaders agreed that the Syrian government must end the use of violence now and promptly enact meaningful reforms that respect the democratic aspirations of Syrian citizens," the White House said.
Turkey says it is closely watching the unrest in neighboring Syria as it cautions against use of excessive force on pro-reform demonstrators.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Turkish ambassador to Damascus, Omer Onhon, is monitoring the situation. Onhon is expected to travel to Turkey to brief Turkey's National Security Council, which gathers civilian and military leaders, on Thursday.
Turkey has urged Syria to press ahead with reforms and to implement them without delay.
