Fenerbahçe hosts Spartak Moscow for spot in Champions League

The winner of tonight's Fenerbahçe-Spartak Moscow game which kicks off in Istanbul at 21:45, will continue to compete in the Champions League. Fenerbahçe will have to come back strong tonight in order to recover from a 2-1 loss against Spartak in Moscow.
If Fenerbahçe manages to eliminate Spartak Moscow in Istanbul tonight they will have reclaimed the missed opportunity from last year to compete in the Champions League…

Basically tonight's 90 minute return game against Spartak Moscow holds much more significance for Fenerbahçe than simply a game. If tonight's hosts are able to beat their Russian rivals after losing by 2-1 in Moscow, then Fenerbahçe will continue to contend in the Champions League. Should they not be able to recover from the previous loss, then Fenerbahçe will go on to play in the UEFA Europa League.
Eliminating Spartak tonight would mean the money rolling in for Fenerbahçe. For playing in the Champions League Play-offs, the team would earn 2.1 million euros. If they make it to the group round, Fenerbahce will earn an additional 8.6 million euros. In addition, every single win in the group stage will bring on one million euros, while for draws the team will earn 500,000 euros. If Fenerbahçe makes it past the group stage they will be awarded 3.5 million euros. They will be paid 3.9 million euros for the quarterfinals, 4.9 million euros for the semifinals and 6.5 million euros for playing in the finals. If they win, then Fenerbahçe will be paid out another 10.5 million euros.
In addition to UEFA's per match payouts, there is also the market pool that will go to the team. The market pool consists of proceeds from television and commercial coverage of the Champions' League, which is later redistributed amongst teams based on the size of each domestic broadcasting contract. Out of last season's combined 341million euro market pool, Trabzonspor was paid out 12,858 euros. This year, the market pool is up by 20 percent which means Turkey's share will also increase to 15,460 million euros. If Fenerbahçe doesn't make it to the group stage, this money will go to last season's Super League champions Galatasaray.
A FIRST FOR KOCAMAN
For Fenerbahçe to make it past this round will bring on a sense of esteem for the fans. After last year's absence from European competitions due to a disqualification call by the Turkish Football Federation who was pressured by UEFA, Fenerbahçe would do well to go as far as they can, which will bring about a whole additional sense of satisfaction. It will also be the first time in three years that Fenerbahçe will have qualified for the Champions League.
As for technical director Aykut Kocaman, to qualify would mark the first time as both a football player and coach that Kocaman would be contending in this arena. Aykut Kocaman was sent-off from Fenerbahçe after the 1995-1996 championship. In the 2010-2011 season, he returned to the team as technical director. That year, Fenerbahçe was eliminated by Young Boys and the following year the team was disqualified. Kocaman has also yet to see a win in Kadıköy after three European league matches.
